Reflecting the city’s grand narrative through small stories of the passengers

In spring 2019, the total passenger count of Taipei MRT exceeded 10 billion. This was an image film created in commemoration.

Breaking the traditional “short film” format used in past image films for Taipei MRT, this time we tailor-made a full stop-motion cel animation video. The main concept of “+1” expressed the idea that no matter how big the number of passengers, it is still made up of countless individuals who chose Taipei MRT as their mode of transport. Every passenger’s trip creates a new story for the city, just as another “1” is added to this chain of numbers. Five short stories representing different demographics and themes were connected to form a larger narrative, thus echoing the relationship between the passengers and the MRT.

The entire video featured 12 frames per second, totaling approximately 3000 frames, which were reflected in the vivid expressions of the characters and the smooth connecting of the images. We adopted innovative camera movements, thus adding a level of difficulty to the drawing perspective and using shifts in perspective to bring a brand new MRT experience to the audience. The soundtrack and sound effects captured authentic sounds of MRT stations, transfers, and broadcasts, giving the video a sense of fun and amusement.
