A fully hand-drawn love story on Taipei’s streets

Swiss canvas bag brand Freitag is famous for recycling European truck canvases to make unique bags. Each time they have a new listing, a foreign artist is selected to collaborate on the “Tarp Blanche” project, creating brand short films that encapsulate corporate values and simultaneously releasing them worldwide. Just as the F717 TWO FACE MIAMI Asia limited edition was launched, we were selected as the representative of Taiwan.

We crafted a story with a fresh style, set in Taipei before the arrival of love, titled “Before we met.” The inspiration of the story came from the concept, “Same canvas, different bags.” Just as Freitag is cut from a whole piece of canvas from a cargo truck, creating two backpacks from the same piece of canvas, such was also the fortuitous meeting between these two strangers.

The film contained no dialogue, and the staggered time sequence conveyed an overlap between dreams and reality. The fully hand-drawn process presented vivid details incorporating a familiar Taipei street style, which included signboards, window bars, and election flags. Artistically-styled visual composition, color selection, and material sourcing all echoed the journey of Freitag, from fabric collection, to rigorous cleaning, and finally manual cutting and sewing.
