The Taipei Hydraulic Engineering Office (HEO) launched the "Taipei Manhole Covers Makeovers" project in collaboration with designers to create 20 unique manhole covers that incorporate local characteristics, breaking away from the conventional image of dirty and dark manhole covers.
Bito was responsible for redesigning two manhole covers for the western district gateway: "Dadaocheng" and "Taipei City."
"Dadaocheng" is named after a historic neighborhood in the Datong district. The design incorporates elements from Dadaocheng, including the Xiahai City God Temple and the iconic A.S. Watson & Co landmark. The graphic is adorned with incense, divination blocks, Chinese medicine, and fabric.
"Taipei City" offers a perspective of water reflections, showcasing landmarks such as Beimen and the Taipei Post Office in vibrant colors. This design breathes new life into the old cityscape, creating a visually engaging representation.
